Good afternoon everybody.. Happy Fathers' Day!! I'm sitting here, thinking about my Daddy.. I think I'll call my brothers today and wish them all a happy Fathers' Day.. I wonder if my oldest brother will be nice to me. I don't know if any of you have brothers as old as I do, but, it's like they're your father to an extent. I have pretty much lived life on my own since my father died. As you guys know, Mom has been the consistent since then.. She and Baby.. My oldest brother Butch...he's always busy..my brother Junior, I don't know if he's mad at me because I live my truth regarding my relationship with his mother. My youngest brother Derrick..he's only 10 years older than me.. he's my youngest brother LOL Hey! My dad wasn't shooting blanks!!! I was born when he was 43.. He always called me the last button on Jacob's coat.. LOLOL I remember being on the car lot and people would come up to my dad (he was somewhat of a local celebrity where we come from)..and they'd say.."Oh John, she's so pretty and she looks just like you!, where'd she come from?"..LOL daddy would always say the same thing.. "She's the last button on jacob's coat".. That always made me feel so special. My father was probably the kindest, most generous man I have ever known in my life.. definitely a tough act to follow.. His pictures don't do him justice.. I want to share with you some of the things that he taught me.. This, from a man born in Virginia in 1927..
1) you are enough
2) don't try to keep up with the Jones'. let them do their thing and you do yours. You and the Jones' are completely different people, and people need to go at their own pace and do their own thing.
3) Never look down on anyone.. If we didn't have the street-sweeper, imagine how dirty the street would be
4) my father always found a way to laugh at discrimination. he thought is was silly, lived through it, never complained, and never, ever, EVER blamed "the white man"..he had friends of all races!!!
5) at the age of 9, as the son of a sharecropper, he worked after school for a white man. One day, my dad was working too slowly, and the man hit my daddy over the head with a two by four.. Daddy carried that scar with him until the day he died. i remember looking at it while he was in the casket. I just thought.."poor baby"..'you can rest now'... Oh how I wish he was still here.. He was the biggest fan of my show! I mean, I was on commercial air then..with all the FCC restrictions and stuff. so, no cursewords..but, he understood comedy, and entertainment, and me... He always wanted one more tape LOLOL
I'm watching "Run's House" on MTV now.. I like this family.. They remind me of mine back home.. Boy do I miss them.. There's this rap song on the radio now that reminds me of my family every time I hear it.. I actually get a lump in my throat every time!!!!! It goes something like "Where'd you go? I miss you so, seems like it's been since you've been gone"... it features this chick with this "Dido" type flair.. I think iof my cousin Amir when I hear that one.. We're ultra close.. Oh! I should call him too!! He has a baby girl who's 4 or 5 now.. Dayum!! I miss his sooo much!!! I miss my family.. I don't even call my Aunt lettie as much as I should (she's Amir's mom)..She and I are so close! We miss each other so much.. But, when I talk to them too much, I get too homesick.. Yeah, Big bad Schree`!! When they start begging me to move back home.. I have to pull back...
HAPPY FATHERS' DAY GUYS!! I'll do more of Daddy's proverbs a little later.. I think I'll sit back, watch rev run, think about my dad and brothers..maybe call them, maybe not.. and blog.. ;-) and watch movies with my Baby..
